Over time, digital data that we created years ago becomes increasingly more difficult to access due to technological changes and advancements. We are confronted with the fact that software applications that we once relied upon for our daily work are abandoned by their developers who sometimes don’t offer a reasonable or viable alternative.

AppleWorks 6 for Mac is a prime example. Starting out in its earliest incarnation as one of the first integrated office suites that ran under the old Apple II computers back in the mid-1980s, AppleWorks enabled Mac users to create a variety of documents, such as word processing files and spreadsheets. Over time, AppleWorks evolved and was ported over to the different CPUs and operating systems that Apple developed and popularized.
In August 2007 AppleWorks 6 achieved “end of life” status when Apple declared that it would no longer sell the software. Mac users officially lost the ability to run AppleWorks 6 natively when Apple released macOS 10.7 (“Lion”) and began migrating new and existing customers over to Intel-powered computers.
Recently, I was given a USB flash drive that contains dozens of AppleWorks 6 documents and was asked whether their data could be salvaged and read. Using a MacBook Pro running a more modern macOS (Sierra 10.12), I obviously could not install and run AppleWorks 6 for Mac. However, I can run Microsoft Windows applications using emulators such as Parallels Desktop 15, and Apple just happened to have developed a Windows version of AppleWorks 6, and no software key is required. Moreover, enterprising souls on the Internet have made the Windows version of AppleWorks 6 available for download.

During my testing phase, I was unable to install AppleWorks 6 for Windows using standard Wine-based emulators such as CrossOver for Mac or PlayOnLinux. Because AppleWorks 6 is a 32-bit app, I decided to see if I could install it using my Windows XP Pro virtual machine running under Parallels Desktop 15. I noticed that the Windows installer checks to see whether a old version of QuickTime is installed. My copy of Windows XP was already configured with QuickTime 7, so I was successful in getting AppleWorks 6 to install and open on my desktop.
Because Microsoft dropped technical support for Windows XP years ago and most people by now will have taken the necessary step to upgrade their desktop operating system to Windows 8 or later, this solution will likely not be readily available to them. Even so, what I suggest may prove to a lifesaver for a few users who are in a predicament where they need to access old AppleWorks 6 documents on their Mac that does not have native support for these files.
